His early experiments in electro-acoustic music yielded the 1971 single "La Cage," and the full-length Deserted Palace followed a year later. Abandoning classical music as a youth, Jarre became enamored of jazz before forming a rock band called Mystère IV in 1968, he became a pupil of the musique concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer, joining Groupe de Recherches Musicales. The son of famed film composer Maurice Jarre, Jean-Michel was born in 1948 in Lyon, France, and began studying piano at the age of five. Jarre continued exploring new terrain with 2021's Amazônia, written as the score for an exhibition, and the 2022 Pierre Henry tribute Oxymore. Later releases like 1993's Chronologie explored contemporary electronic styles such as trance and chill-out, and two mid-2010s Electronica albums featured guest appearances from an all-star lineup of electronic, rock, and classical musicians. His subsequent studio albums such as 1984's Zoolook made extensive use of sampling, incorporating numerous international influences.

He became the first Western artist to perform in China, and the events were documented on the 1982 release The Concerts in China.
